This is a very common question in the fitness world.

Quite frankly just losing weight is very easy to do.

This comes down to:

Calories in, is less then, Calories out.

Therefore

Calories in = how much you eat.

Calories out = how much energy your body uses.

What is Calories?

Calories is the energy contained in food, this is usually defined in Kj’s (kilojoules – where K is defining 1000) on food packaging.

There is approximately 4.184joules to 1 calorie.

Therefore when you look at food packaging on it if it has Kj’s, divide it by 4.184 to see how many calories are in it.

Some example calories:

Two pieces of toast has about 500Kj’s which equates to 121 calories.

Coke has 1080Kj’s which equates to roughly 260 calories.

Big Mac has 2060Kj’s which equates to roughly 500 calories.

An average foot long subway has roughly 2500Kj’s which equates to 605 calories.

How many calories do I burn in a day?

Unfortunately without seeing you and measuring you up I can not even start to give you an estimate of how many calories you would burn in a day.

This depends on a multitude of things:

Gender

Genetics

Muscle mass

Level of activity

These are only a few things that determine how many calories you burn in one day.

If you have a look around it states that you may burn anywhere between 1500 ~ 2000 calories in a day for a average person, you can use this as a guideline, but a guideline only as I mentioned there are so many factors which contribute towards this.

So if you were only looking to lose weight this would be a form of a starting point.

But remember this is only to lose weight on the scales, there are hidden dangers to this, but this article will hopefully make you aware of how to read packaging on food labels!

Keep an eye out for the next issues I will be writing which will be:

The Dangers of calorie counting.

10 most common pitfalls in training.

What do you want to look like

Depending on responses I will write one before the other in regards to:

                                                               i. Athletic

                                                             ii. Lean

                                                            iii. Body building

More to come!

If you’re in a management position or looking to move into a management position, firstly look at yourself first and determine what kind of a manager are you or will you be?

To start things off let’s describe managers in 2 titles for now:

Manager by title.

Manager of choice.

Let’s look at the first one.

Manager by title:

You can all agree that everyone has this in their company, business or as their manager.

I have seen many people that have been promoted into a management position for the wrong reasons.

Some of the reasons but not limited to:

They “knew” the right people.

It was a “need” at the time for the company.

They could talk the talk.

They are good at what they do.

While there are more reasons, I think this is enough for now.

Let’s analyse the each point.

Bias decisions made by other managers, to have certain people promoted over others who are more skilled. This is a very bad management decision especially if the person being promoted is known by other colleagues that there were more highly skilled operators to choose from. In effect you have just become a – Manager by title.

This one is not entirely the person’s fault, it would be the fault of the person promoting someone into that position because they “needed it” rather then spending the time to train someone and ensure that the “manager” had enough skills to manage others. Unfortunately you still have become a – Manager by title.

These people are the go getters of the world, they know every answer to everything, they are never wrong and they can make the world spin backwards if they wanted to – so they would try to lead you to believe.
They have the passion and drive – but lack the skills that are necessarily, but do not tell them this because they will argue this point to the death to prove you wrong. Unfortunately for them being able to take on ideas from others and feedback is crucial to becoming a successful manager, therefore they are still – Manager by title.

Now these are highly skilled operators in what they do, they are the best in the field and promoting them would probably be the best idea as they are achieving all KPI’s and other goals that are set out for them.

Though if their job scope does not include communicating with others, how would they go about communicating with a team of people?

Putting it simple – if you’re a math’s genius, does this automatically make you a good math’s teacher? No of course it doesn’t!

Therefore without the skills of being able to lead others – Manager by title.

If the above 4 sound similar to you, if you do not change the way you view things you could be headed for a train wreck.

I will keep adding onto this and hopefully if you have identified yourself as one of the above – watch this space, it is not all doom and gloom, and there are definitely ways of improving yourself to become a better manager.

Working in the fitness industry the most common question I get is “how do I get fit?”

This in turn puts people on the wrong path because how do most people determine the term fit?

For 80% of people “fit” = lose weight and tone up.

To lose weight and tone up you would need to train in a different way to people who want to be fit.

How to avoid training the wrong way.

1. Know exactly what you want.
To goal set on fitness, first find a photo of the physique you want to look like and work towards this. You may think it’s getting fit, but most of the time you actually need to lose weight.

Because generally speaking people who are overweight can also be fit.

2. Know how to train.
Research how to train for your goal, walking may not help you achieve your goals and also lifting weights by itself probably won’t either.

Simply speaking would a marathon runner train like a sprinter? No they have different methods for different sports so different goals have different training techniques.

3. Stick to it!
How long have you been in the shape you are now and want to change it?

1…2…5 years?

Do not expect in 1 to 2 months for your body to change after you have been doing what ever you wanted for the past x amount of years.

If you have any questions in regards to this please feel free to comment and I will put you on the right path for success!

Speaking to a large number of people I’d say only 10% of people actually have different new years resolutions from the year before….hence the title *DITTO* new years resolutions.

With the number of resources available to people I am wanting to know why people do not reach their goals.

Out of the top 10 new years resolutions the one’s that perked my interests were:

Quit Smoking, Lose weight, Get a promotion.

Been in a management position in the fitness industry I was wanting to know why people were not reaching their goals, as this is a great goal to have for your fitness and personal life which in turn will effect your career as well.

Besides the tips we hear every year “Write down your goals, set milestones, reward yourself at everyone, e.t.c. e.t.c.”

Where my thoughts are travelling on this topic is that:

Are people not holding themselves accountable anymore?

Do they have external factors which contribute to them not being able to hold on?

I have achieved all goals that I have set myself for within the last 5 years due with some easy tips I received, and as time goes on I would like to share these with you and hear your success stories and challenges that you come across which made you fail, and I may be able to give you some pointers.

For the time being I bid you good night!
